The President’s State of the Union Address had some record moments in it, including the first-ever mention by a president about lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender persons in a SOTU. The President’s use of these words was a trending topic on social media.

President Obama said, "As Americans, we respect human dignity, even when we're threatened, which is why I've prohibited torture, and worked to make sure our use of new technology like drones is properly constrained. That's why we defend free speech, and advocate for political prisoners, and condemn the persecution of women, or religious minorities, or people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. We do these things not only because they're right, but because they make us safer."

President Obama has been a long-time supporter of LGBT rights, and his mentioning of these orientations during the speech quickly became a trend on Twitter, in addition to the general #SOTU. More than 2.6 million tweets were posted with the State of the Union hashtag.

However, by far the most popular moment of the SOTU that was tweeted was about President Obama’s joke to Republicans that he had no more campaigns to run. Republicans responded with cheers; however, the President quipped back, “I know because I’ve won both of them.”
