Some of us want to keep the '70s and '80s in our past; others want to bring portions of them into the current day. Burger King is bringing back the Yumbo, complete with a throwback commercial. Burger King has some great costume designers and prop people in their latest TV spot advertising the Yumbo ham and cheese sandwich. You have to see it to appreciate it.

The younger generation seems to like blasts from the past. This Burger King ‘70s throwback commercial will grab attention and interest from that group. It features traditional afros — back in style. It features a lava lamp. How many of our kids have those in their rooms now? Many. Burger King is building a connection to the younger generation through this approach.

The history of the sandwich is that the Yumbo was on the Burger King menu in 1968 until 1974. It is a ham and cheese sandwich with black forest ham, American cheese, lettuce, and mayo on a toasted hoagie bun. Sounds pretty tasty. Back then, people were more interested in burgers. Perhaps Burger King was ahead of its time. Now people are interested in healthier options, and this ham and cheese sandwich is one such healthier option.

Sometimes things are behind the times. Sometimes things are ahead of the times. It’s good to review ideas from your past and reintroduce them, new and improved, when appropriate. The Yumbo is a good reintroduction to Burger King’s menu.
