YouTube's Ad-Free Subscription Service

Want to watch YouTube ad free? Well, you’re in luck. Google is starting an ad-free subscription service.

The service, called Music Key, is $9.99 per month and allows users to watch videos without ads and also download videos. Music Key is Google’s amped-up version of Spotify and Rdio.

The service hasn’t been without hiccup, though. Music Key’s launch was delayed because of a dispute with numerous independent record labels. Many indie labels accused Google of threatening them in order to get signoff. The labels claimed that YouTube threatened to block their videos altogether if they did not agree to the Music Key terms.

However, Google has now said it has resolved those issues and signed with many of the independent labels.

For mobile device users, there is excellent news. The music will still play in the background, even when the app is closed. Anyone whose tried to use YouTube on their phone or tablet (or who tried to Chromecast YouTube) knows how frustrating it has been to exit the app only to have whatever you were watching be terminated.

You will still be able to watch videos on YouTube without a subscription; however, it will not be ad free.
