Are Personal Brands Above the Law?

It sometimes seems that no matter what personal brands do, the public and the market continue to love them. At least the public does have some boundaries. In the case of Ray Rice, he may not be forgiven.

Ray Rice had it all. He had a terrific position on the Baltimore Ravens football team. He had multiple endorsements from Nike, EA Sports, and others. Now those endorsement deals have been canceled and with them millions of dollars will be lost for Ray Rice.

Domestic violence is apparently where the public draws the line. Rice has been shown on film hitting his fiancée and wife. Janay Palmer and Rice both hit each other, then she was knocked off her feet into a railing. Where were people to help her? Or would no one stand up to Ray Rice? Nomore.org is a nonprofit that was launched in September of 2013 with the goal of ending domestic violence and sexual assault. It has goals of increasing bystander involvement.

What a shame for Rice to lose so much, but more horribly, how tragic for Palmer to have been a victim of domestic violence. Rice’s personal brand is forever tainted and rightly so. It’s too bad he didn’t realize all he had going for him and channeled that aggression on the football field instead.
