One never knows when true inspiration will hit or from where it will come. Being versed in many subject areas and having a broad range of experiences is a great way to be present when inspiration hits. A family member is an expert in nanotechnology. We always hoped that someday, nano would impact the marketing and branding world. It finally has.

Structural color is color that is not caused by pigments, but instead by structure. Scientists found on a nano level that organisms such as the blue morpho butterfly have complicated functional color. When scientists looked at the blue morpho wings under an electron microscope, they found structures like a Christmas tree standing up on the surface of the wings. The iridescent effect of the wings is actually due to light reflections off of these structures.

Already the military, textiles, health care, and cosmetics are researching ways to apply these findings to various products and solutions. Sometimes it seems as if we have discovered all there is to know. Then some discovery is made on a nano level, and the world is a whole new place again.

How does this relate to your brand? It may have an impact on your packaging. It may be a new product extension. It may inspire a whole new family of products. Toss it out at a marketing meeting and see what happens.
