|Call for Google Glass to be Banned from Cinemas in UK
By: Jessica Cherok
The Cinema Exhibitors’ Association (CEA) has come out against Google Glass being worn in UK cinemas. The CEA, which represents the interest of cinema operators in the United Kingdom, has said Google Glass should be banned “whether the film is playing or not.”
The fear is that Glass wearers will use the device to record and create bootleg copies of movies. Google, however, has come out in response, saying that Google Glass only has the capacity to record about 45 minutes, and that the quality would be “very poor.” Still, poor quality does not seem to deter bootleggers.
The CEA has no real authority to force movie theaters to require patrons to remove their Google Glass devices, meaning it would be up to individual theater operators to determine whether or not glass could be worn. For its part, Google issues a guide on how Glass should be used.
The guide covers the Dos and Don’ts of wearing Glass. One important Don’t: “Be creepy or rude (aka, a “Glasshole”). Respect others' privacy and if they have questions about Glass don’t get snappy. Be polite and explain what Glass does and remember, a quick demo can go a long way. In places where cell phone cameras aren’t allowed, the same rules will apply to Glass. If you’re asked to turn your phone off, turn Glass off as well. Breaking the rules or being rude will not get businesses excited about Glass and will ruin it for other Explorers.”
