|Tinder Faces Sexual Harassment Suit
By: Jessica Cherok
Tinder’s former vice president of marketing is suing the popular dating app for sexual harassment and discrimination.
The former VP, Whitney Wolfe, says she was stripped of her co-founder title, and called a “whore” at a Tinder company event. Despite bringing her complaints to Tinder’s CEO, Wolfe claims nothing was done.
IAC/InterActiveCorp, which owns the majority of Tinder, has suspended the Chief Marketing Officer, Justin Mateen, for sending Wolfe inappropriate messages. Wolfe allegedly had a romantic relationship with Mateen, which subsequently fell apart. Mateen allegedly called her names during meetings, spread rumors that Wolfe was an alcoholic, as well as sent her harassing text messages.
Wolfe said she decided to resign after being called a “whore” at a company party. She was officially stripped of her title in 2013, because Mateen felt having a “girl founder” would have negative impacts on the company’s value.
In a statement, IAC said, “We unequivocally condemn these messages, but believe that Ms. Wolfe’s allegations with respect to Tinder and its management are unfounded.”
Wolfe is just one of many female executives experiencing harassment in male-dominated Silicon Valley. Many women in tech face hostile attitudes, and even discrimination.
