Community Creativity: Hulking Steel Mill Becomes a Showplace Setting

Talk about community renewal and the PR that goes with it! Thirty-five thousand soccer fans watched the U.S.-Portugal World Cup soccer game via a giant TV screen on the SteelStacks campus — a newly created town square — against the backdrop of a hulking, shut-down Bethlehem Steel mill in Bethlehem, PA.

Between them, the City of Bethlehem, Pa., the Bethlehem Redevelopment Authority and several other partners launched SteelStacks in 2011 as “a dynamic arts and cultural campus that’s bringing new life to the city’s former Bethlehem Steel plant, which closed in 1995.” The site was “once one of the largest Brownfields in the U.S….” It all represents amazing creativity in place of industrial ruin, and an example of what taking a relational stance in response to adversity can accomplish
