The rumor has been that teens are avoiding — and even leaving — Facebook en masse. But according to a new survey of 12 and 13-year-olds, Facebook usage has actually increased. Why the sudden positive shift?
It may very well be Facebook’s focus on mobile that is enticing teens. The company has recently made a huge push in designing and developing a better mobile experience, something that they’ve been largely successful at creating. In addition, mobile apps are incredibly popular right now, especially with teen smartphone users, a popularity that is only sure to increase as more tweens become teens.
Recently, as several reports emerged about teens not using Facebook, the company’s investors became increasingly concerned. However, it seems that for every study reporting that there was a problem with teens leaving, there were just as many claiming the issue had subsided.
Figuring out how to keep its teens, as well as entice new teens to join, has been a main priority for Facebook. This particular age group is important to Facebook’s bottom line in terms of advertising. Companies want to get their brands in front of the teen and young adult demographic to sell products. For Facebook, losing teens to Twitter and Tumblr would have been a huge blow to earnings.
