Robert Morris University (RMU) is a small, private university In Chicago. This university is leading the way with new scholarships for eSports; in particular, players of League of Legends.

League of Legends is one of the most popular video games. RMU states that the ability to play League of Legends well requires team strategy and mental prowess. RMU is adding League of Legends to their varsity sports listing. Those who play it at the college level are part of the Collegiate Star League. RMU hopes to win the national championship and is recruiting students with that goal in mind.

Colleges and universities are always looking for a way to stand out from the pack. Offering a scholarship for eSports is definitely a differentiator that could be important to gamers. RMU offers over 50 different courses of study, including engineering, nursing, business and information systems. If gamers want to try to earn one of the scholarships, they have a broad choice of options to study when they are not gaming.

The world of education is changing. It sticks to mind that many of today’s younger doctors are good at robotic surgeries because of all the Nintendo practice in their youth. It may be too soon to judge in what area League of Legends superstars will excel. But if a collegiate league exists around this game and RMU is offering scholarships, the future impact of these students must be hopeful.
