Poor Timing on Release of Top Brands in Car Quality

J.D. Power released its car quality survey. Some of the highlights: Porsche topped the list for the second year in a row; GM had six winners in segment categories; and the introduction of technology into cars caused some quality ratings issues. At the same time this report is being released, GM and Chrysler are in the news for some quality issues they didn’t fix.

GM is taking heat right now for failing to take care of faulty ignition switches on some of their vehicles when the problem arose a decade ago. Chrysler is also being investigated. Timing is poor considering the release of the J.D. Power quality survey. Any good press that GM would have received from the quality survey is now being negated for their failure to attend to an issue.

American automakers need good press to help the economy continue to recover. Poor ratings will cause buyers to potentially consider other models. Porsche, Jaguar, Lexus, Hyundai, and Toyota were the best-performing brands in this year's survey. The worst performers were Fiat, Jeep, Mitsubishi, Scion, and Mazda. Of the best-performing brands, only Hyundai and Toyota appeal to all consumers of all income brackets. Porsche, Jaguar, and Lexus are out of reach for male consumers. It shouldn’t have to be that way. Let’s hope GM does a good job recovering from this problem and makes the brand stronger. Let’s hope.
