Did Subway Fumble the Ball with their Super Bowl Commercial?

Peyton Manning had a few mishaps during the 2014 Super Bowl, and his team just didn’t bring their A game. Subway seemed to follow suit. They made a last-minute decision to run a Super Bowl spot with their new Frito commercial, which is making a few people question “Why?”

Subway unveiled a new sandwich commercial on the Thursday before the Super Bowl game. Friday evening they decided to take a Super Bowl spot as other sponsors cancelled. They had already released the commercial, but why not show it to a larger audience and perhaps get a discount as spots opened up?

With around 70 commercials during the game itself, it was hard to keep track of them all. If you missed this particular commercial due to conversation, food, or a bathroom break, Subway unveiled its newest product, the Fritos Chicken Enchilada.

Does this strike you as odd? First of all, Fritos and Subway?! Taco Bell joined up with PepsiCo and used Frito-Lay products in their Doritos Locos Tacos and Fritos in their Beefy Crunchy Burritos. It doesn’t really raise an eyebrow with Taco Bell because Taco Bell is fast food. But Subway has established their position as healthy fast food and putting Fritos in their sandwich does not yell healthy!

Back in the day, our home economics teacher would demonstrate the concept of fatty foods by putting Fritos in a blender. The final outcome was a disgusting glob that visually drove her point home about the effect of fatty foods in your body. Most of us won’t eat a blender full of Fritos, but even eating 1 oz. of Fritos at 10g of fat is 20–25% of the recommended fat intake for a whole day. Not a healthy choice.

Frito-Lay is a multi-billion dollar portion of PepsiCo, and the world definitely enjoys their potato chips because not everyone eats healthy. Subway has worked hard to establish itself as the healthy fast food alternative. Subway partnered with PepsiCo by putting Fritos on the new Subway sandwich that was promoted to the whole world during the Super Bowl. Did this partnership just destroy all of Subway’s good positioning?
