The new Volkswagen Passat TDI commercial shares some impressive numbers and drives the message home convincingly. The message is that the Passat, a product of “powerful German engineering,” can drive a long way on a single tank of fuel.

795 miles per tank is what Volkswagen claims with the Passat. That is the distance from Pittsburgh to Pensacola, Florida. That’s a long way! That appeals to anyone who doesn’t like the price of gas at the pumps — most of us.

Forty-three miles per gallon is the second impressive number Volkswagen shares. Considering that the Toyota Prius gets 48 mpg, 43 is a whopping number for a car that is not a hybrid. The Passat TDI is a diesel and diesels do get great gas mileage. It is also a new generation diesel that burns cleaner and is better for the environment. Forty-three is a great number and it makes one pause. Did you know that all but one of Volkswagen’s TDI (turbocharged direct injection) lineup gets 41+mpg? Now you do.

The final but most important number is 13 hours with no music. The driver wanted to learn Spanish on their trip. The passenger in the commercial wasn’t so interested, but at the end both conversed in great Spanish. Most people realize it takes a long time to learn another language, so the viewer realizes a lot of time has passed, and the driver is only just now stopping to fill up. The pairing is effective.

The commercial is amusing without being creepy or having bad taste like some on the market right now, and it communicates the impressive fuel efficiency of the Volkswagen TDI lineup. Nice marketing!
