Must Be Over 21 to Follow on Twitter

You now have to go through a couple of extra steps to follow your favorite alcohol brand on Twitter. The social media site has now started an age-screening process related to following alcohol brands.

The measure is designed to keep Twitter users under the age of 21 from following adult beverage accounts. According to Twitter’s Tarun Jain, “Our hope is that this approach to age-screening will enable alcohol brands to responsibly and safely connect with the right audience on Twitter.”

In order to follow alcoholic brands, you will receive a direct message containing a link to the age verification page. You then have 24 hours to complete the verification. If you don’t, you will be unable to follow that specific account.

Currently, the age verification only applies to brands that have partnered with Twitter. These brands include: Jim Beam, Knob Creek, Heineken, Bud Light, and Bacardi.

Age verification isn’t new to Twitter. The company debuted the feature in 2012, as part of its partnership with Buddy Media. Nor is it limited to alcohol brands. Any client that wants to add age verification to their account can do so by contacting Twitter’s account support team.
