|'Safety Culture' a Term With Vast PR Implications

When PR practitioners enter an organization to help it relate well to its publics, they need to look carefully around to be sure that all of its potential risk factors are included. This should be self-evident on an oil platform, say, but even there management without effective PR prompting may be prone to risks it should be avoiding. We're presuming, of course, that operation of the West Delta 32 oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico did not have a PR component when it exploded in November, 2012, killing three workers. Yet the Coast Guard's report on the accident indicates how the term "safety culture" is meaningless unless it's taken seriously. And who is better qualified than PR practitioners to insure that such terms are taken seriously?
