Book a Flash Mob

Does anyone else find it disheartening that flash mobs are now for hire? In maybe one of the biggest displays of how much corporations just don’t get it, many companies are hiring flash mobs to create spontaneity at their corporate functions.

Yes, create spontaneity.

Now HR departments are organizing flash mobs rather than social media. And, well — that’s just not in the spirit of things, right? Instead of strangers randomly gathering at random locations they learned about only moments before, flash mob participants gather and coordinate weeks in advance.

I have to say, the idea of flash mobs going corporate really takes away some of the whimsy. And I wasn’t even all that much of a flash mob fan before they started working for The Man. I’m certainly soured now, though.

Hiring a flash mob to spice up your CPA convention sounds about as cliché as decorating offices with motivational posters. It’s like an episode of The Office, only real.

What makes it even more shameful is the companies that offer planned flash mobs are charging around $80,000 per mobbing. Seems like some entrepreneurial flash mobsters decided to monetize, and monetize big.

So, prepare yourselves. Your next conference or convention may be jam-packed with planned spontaneity, hired to surprise and amuse you.
