Klout's Popularity Contest is Coming to Businesses

Apparently there is now Klout for businesses — aptly named Klout for Business — where you can find the same meaningless number, once only available to individuals, now ranking businesses as a whole.

If you’re unfamiliar with Klout, it is an application that will measure the amount of social media influence someone has. The scale is from 0–100, with the higher scores reflecting higher levels of social media influence across several different outlets. The more active you are and the more people you interact with, as well as their continued sharing of your posts with others, create higher and higher Klout scores.

Let’s be realistic here — Klout has been little more than a mechanism for measuring your own social media narcissism. Sure, the occasional marketing or PR firm might be interested in the Klout score of someone they were looking to hire, but even that seems sadly arbitrary when compared with properly vetting a candidate’s experience.

But what real good does knowing a Klout score do?

In terms of ranking individuals, there isn’t much value, but Klout’s new feature, designed to rank the social influence of a business, may prove to be worthwhile. After all, one of the most sought-after pieces of data in social media marketing is how to measure the business’s presence.

Klout for Business breaks down the sites on which a business is doing well, and who is talking about what. That way, you’ll be able to see if the social media specialist you hired — with or without looking at their personal Klout score — is doing a good job.
