|Use AmEx to Buy on Twitter
By: Jessica Cherok
Get ready for it to be a whole lot easier to max out your American Express card! Twitter and American Express recently announced that they're giving eligible cardholders the ability to buy items by using a special hashtag. Really cool, and quite possibly a whole new way to purchase goods.
American Express cardholders could already purchase $25 American Express gift cards by using #buyamexgiftcards25. Now, cardholders are able to buy additional things like a Kindle Fire, Sony Headband camera, Xbox, etc.
All you have to do is use the specific hashtag in your tweet. American Express’s @AmExSynch will respond to your tweet, and you have 15 minutes to reply to confirm the purchase. Then the item will be shipped (free, 2-day) directly to whatever billing address you have listed in your Amex account.
The ease of purchase is likely to be a hit amongst consumers, especially those who already spend a lot of time on their mobile devices. It’s also likely to give American Express a boost in cardholder membership with the younger crowd. The average age for American Express cardholders in 2012 was 57. Not exactly the e-commerce demographic.
And while the hashtag-to-purchase concept is intriguing, it also brings up the importance of online security, specifically in light of Twitter’s recent mass hacking. If you’re one of those people who has the same password for multiple accounts, you could be setting yourself up for a #nightmare with this. By gaining access to your Twitter info, someone could then access your American Express account and hashtag order up a storm.
