|Documentation: PR's a Pressurized Field
By: Doug Bedell
Internal stresses of being a public relations person are discussed in a new paper co-authored by faculty members at Baylor University and the University of Texas at Austin. Most of the 30 PR pros interviewed (with an average of 27 years of experience) served as an "organizational conscience" and faced personal pressures in their "'kill the messenger'" predicament, the study advises, and a few were fired or demoted.
The study can be downloaded for $37 and might well be worth the price for PR people looking for solace in a pressurized field among colleagues not willing to be pushed around. Sounds like the meaning of professionalism comes through loud and clear.
Here's a further discussion of the study from the Grand Rapids Business Journal. It's by Tim Penning, Phd, APR, an associate professor and associate director of the School of Communications at Grand Valley State University in Michigan. "While the study was limited to only 30 senior level PR professionals," he ends his post, "it does demonstrate that when PR is properly understood and practiced, it is an inherently ethical profession that benefits entire organizations and the publics with whom they interact."
