Did you know that July is National Hot Dog Month? Better yet, did you know that the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council is a real organization?
Now you do!
Yes, to celebrate National Hot Dog Month, the awesomely named council crowd-sourced a new slogan. There were eight finalists, and the winner of the contest was "Hot Dogs: Relish the Moment." Apparently the contest poll was conducted through Facebook, and the other slogans included "Make the Dog Days of Summer a Footlong" and "We Know How the Sausage Gets Made."
All of this, mind you, is true.
The council was established in 1994 and is under the American Meat Institute's umbrella. It's goal is to be an advocate and information source about the consumption, nutrition and manufacturing information about hot dogs and sausages.
The campaign is ending at a good time. With baseball season well under way, the ballpark frank is reaching its peak time. To have people walking around with a tshirt proclaiming the new slogan on it will undoubtedly get some attention. We think it might be fighting back against the negative press hot dogs have been getting, too; those pesky physicians.
Will it work? It certainly won't hurt them, we think. A user-generated contest will bring out the staunch advocates, so unless opposers start their own campaign against National Hot Dog Month, we see this to be pretty positive for the organization and the hot dog. In the post we linked to, we figured that the hot dog group would hit back with something experienced-based, and using a crowd-sourced campaign is pretty darn close to what we were thinking.
Of course, people may combat the campaign with the latest "findings" saying that food ads are causing obesity, but we are getting tired of proclaiming research that is being published but rarely getting out of the "correlation without causation" realm.
Stop blaming the Ad World, people.
The contest, based on one of the comments, had 255 entries and was then narrowed down to eight. Whether hot dogs are unhealthy or not, the people enjoy "relishing the moment." We'll definitely keep an eye out to see if any groups try to ruin the dog days of summer for the council. During National Hot Dog Month, though, we don't see them having a fighting chance.
