Inept PR: Shades of the Old Soviet Union

Jim Horton has it exactly right on Online Public Relations Thoughts: Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dimitry Rogozin may be hip enough to be using Twitter, but his message there blaming "anti-heroes" scientists for the failure of the latest Russian space probe and demanding their names is, as Horton notes, egregious. "Who wants to be mocked?" Jim asks. "The real PR disaster is the Russian government shooting itself in the foot."

Space exploration will always be problematic. Lusty cheers are deserved when it goes well, and profound sympathy when it doesn't. For a government manager not to understand this seems flatfooted, a throwback to the times when ideology was supposed to fuel rockets. Sad.
