A Key PR Role: Helping Management Get In Step

Nike, Levi-Strauss, and other U.S. companies — the issue of working conditions in factories overseas that produce products for American companies is an emotionally loaded one. It's also an appropriate concern for corporate PR, especially if other management groups seem to be shunning the subject. Transparency is becoming the rule, and PR can lead the way to an understanding of what's at stake and how best to comply. Linda Locke at the Institute for Public Relations steers us to a solid journal article on the subject by Dr. David J. Doorey, of York University in Toronto.

Entitled "The Transparent Supply Chain: From Resistance to Implementation at Nike and Levi-Strauss," Dr. Doorey's article is a call to recognize enlightened reality in global human relations. "All too often, however, " Linda Locke notes, "corporate leadership reacts to the critics without seeing opportunity for value in the criticism." Being attuned and responsive to reality is PR's job. We recommend Linda's post as providing encouragement for relational leadership.
