We don't know anyone practicing medical communication as a specialty within PR, but we hope they're out there and wish them well. In a field as busy as medicine with the stakes as high as they often are, doctor-patient, hospital-community, and other forms of medical communication are well worth understanding and improving. These thoughts occurred in noting a press release for a new book, "Medical Communication: Defining the Discipline," written jointly by a physician and a communication professor.

The authors are Dr. Theodore Avtgis, professor and chair of Communication Studies at Ashland University in Ashland, Ohio, and E. Phillips Polack, M.D., clinical professor of surgery at West Virginia University. “I believe that this book combines evidence-based communication concepts with evidence-based medical care resulting in a best practices approach to medical communication,” Avtgis says. “This is important for both those within healthcare professions as well as society in general, as every human being will eventually interface with the healthcare system.”

Practitioners of medical communication, be the judge. But we thought this book and others listed by Google under "medical communication" are worth the attention of PR practitioners aspiring to develop specialized skills.

And here's another approach to medical communication - the video newscasts being provided by the Carolinas HealthCare System. Here's the press release.
