Avoid Slapdash Event Planning

The Indie Book Event being held on Saturday in New York may turn out to be a well-attended gathering of publishing industry influentials, but Michael N. Marcus doubts it.

On his Book Making blog, Marcus notes a number of reasons why Indie is coming across as amateurish — starting with a news release datelined July 25 for an event only five days later.

All you event planners, pay heed. "Now, I'm not a newbie in publishing (over 20 books so far)," Marcus writes, "but I am always willing to learn. I might also have been interested in speaking at the event, or even exhibiting so I could promote my books about self publishing. Or, I might have helped promote the event on this blog.

"But, NO!

"Media Relations Contact" Leah Breyette — or someone who works with her at DDR Public Relations — sent out a release for an event to be held on July 30th, on July 25th. (It's possible that the short notice was the fault of the show management, not the PR company.)"

Marcus goes on to list nine other reasons why the Indie event "seems a bit flaky," starting with the fact that its website "is still incomplete, just days away from the event."

This is not how to win friends and influence people. If you're going to the trouble of sponsoring or helping with an event, do it right in PR terms — as well, of course, as logistical ones.
