LinkedIn On the High Road

Impressed as one might be by LinkedIn's first-day $9.1 billion stock market valuation, it was heartening to hear the social network's management sticking to the high road amidst talk of an unsustainable new market "bubble" (which hopefully SM isn't). "To be honest with you," said LinkedIn chief executive Jeffrey Weiner,  "I didn't give a lot of thought to what the opening would be like; this isn't necessarily indicative of anything. The market will do what it will do. What we are completely focused on is our long-term plans and our fundamentals, and getting that right."

Focusing on the value in a popular Web networking service like LinkedIn — that's exactly the thing to keep doing. Never mind visions of grandeur, keep the user connections strong and expanding. Sharpen your understanding and use of LinkedIn by spending some time with Shiva's suggestions and incorporating those that feel appropriate into your daily routine. Like building contacts, contacting with media people on LinkedIn, joining relevant groups, listing your events, and seeking recommendations.

LinkedIn is a great tool — the way to keep its marketing setting sustainable is to use it to our increasing advantage.
