Ranker probably has a list for you. Launched in 2009, the Los Angeles-based site is ranked 51st on Quantcast’s listings of the top sites based on traffic, with 21,037,852 people in the U.S visiting it monthly. It brought in eight-figure revenue last year and is profitable, according to Clark Benson, CEO and founder.

So why start a site about lists when the internet is filled with them? Benson, a list-lover, noticed that many he found online missed the mark. He had soon dreamed up a site where readers could rank such lists, based on which ones they liked. That crowdsourced approach became the business model for Ranker.
