Why ‘Wonder Woman’ Soared While ‘Green Lantern’ Bombed |

As you know, Wonder Woman made box office history this weekend, earning (as of this writing) $100 million in its domestic debut for a $223m worldwide opening. That’s an all-time record for a female director and the biggest gross by far for a female comic book superhero movie and a DC Comics movie that didn’t star Batman or Superman. And, more importantly (for this discussion), it far outgrossed the deluge of failed male-targeted hero’s journey franchise-starters that we’ve seen in the last several years.
It leapfrogged over the likes of John Carter, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, Prince of Persia, Pan, Tron: Legacy, The Legend of Tarzan and Green Lantern. You can look at this in two ways. First, the female-driven action fantasy succeeded where so many boy-friendly franchises cratered. Second, Wonder Woman is a huge hit because audiences wanted to see a Wonder Woman movie.
