When Alicia Keys declared this summer that she was going to stop wearing cosmetics altogether, she ramped up the Instagram #nomakeup movement to a whole new level. She was shunning makeup not for just a single selfie, but with the goal of sparking a revolution.
In explaining her decision, on Lena Dunham’s Lenny Letter, Keys cited the lyrics from her song “When a Girl Can’t Be Herself:”
In the morning from the minute that I wake up/What if I don’t want to put on all that makeup/Who says I must conceal what I’m made of /Maybe all this Maybelline is covering my self-esteem.
She went on to say, “The truth is…I was really starting to feel like that — that, as I am, I was not good enough for the world to see.”
