We watched the Charlie’s Angels movie recently. We love the timeless crimefighting and undying allegiance to a man named Charlie, who directs their activities but only ever allows them to hear his voice. Now there’s a mysterious app that can direct activities for you, too — by providing background information about people in your upcoming meetings.

It feels a little sneaky and a little underhanded, like it is a classified FBI file they slide across the table in the interview room. The investigator says, “Here, take a look at this. You might be surprised what we found.” The app Charlie is like that. You connect your Google calendar and your social media tools of Facebook and Twitter and let the app email you info on the people in your upcoming meetings.

It is true that building relationships with your customers is about learning things about them, and this knowledge can build sales and lifelong customers. Knowing, remembering, and acting upon the little things will impress people. Knowing about your customers’ interests and passions and tying them into your presentation will help you stand out from the rest. It just seems like obtaining this information should be hard work, not available to everyone, and it shouldn’t be free. Yet it is, from Charlie.

The Charlie app is marketed as our personal assistant. We love to try new things, so we signed up, created a fictitious meeting with a friend, and waited for the meeting time to arrive to see what Charlie would tell us about this person. Initially, we were greeted by a nice email message titled, “Nice to meet you.” Charlie introduced him/herself as our personal assistant. In our case, he will be a he. He assured us that we will walk into every meeting prepared to make a killer impression.

The reports provided some helpful information in a concise format. Having this information definitely prepares us with some on-target talking points. We look forward to working with Charlie.
