AP News Stands Out with Follow-Through

There are jokes about which news source people follow and what slant they are provided. Some media sources feature only stories on certain topics and only slanted to a certain direction. It’s difficult to ascertain whether the information provided to the public is true or propaganda. In stark contrast, AP News is a quality source of information. They stand out in our minds with the follow-up on their breaking stories, specifically on labor abuse in the Southeast Asia fishing industry.

From a marketing perspective, we were appalled by the labor abuses of fisherman in Indonesia. The fish that were caught get to the U.S. through Walmart, Sysco, Kroger, and pet food brands. We knew we wouldn’t buy fish at those outlets because of the stories AP published. Even though the stores may say they do not condone such activities, by accepting those products, they allow the practices to continue. As an individual, what we can do to show our support is not buy fish at those stores. People or organizations with more power can do more. AP News did just that.

The AP News stories of the reality of the Indonesian fishing market did cause a change. They followed up their story with a personal story of triumph. A man was reunited with his family after losing a decade of his life in slavery. It wouldn’t have happened without the reporting of AP News. While many times we focus on the efforts of brands or companies, it is important to acknowledge how information reaches us. AP News stands out with character and quality reporting.
