Apple Wants to Change Your Cooking

We always wanted to put all our recipes on the computer. That was the motivating reason we told our aging parents why they should buy a computer. (Turns out they did it to get on dating sites and play computer games!) Now Apple, via their iPad, is doing exactly what we wanted to do, but they have done it the Apple way and taken it up a step.

One of the best ways to sell a product is to demonstrate usefulness in everyday life. This is what Apple is doing with their Change with iPad campaign. On Yahoo we saw the ad “Cooking with iPad.” The brilliant marketers they are, their supporting copy is “You’ll be amazed what you’re capable of with iPad as your sous-chef. Make prep a little easier, master new culinary techniques, and explore recipes that inspire you.” Apple is changing the way we think about cooking. They are daring us to believe that with the help of the iPad, we all can cook. Apple is making the iPad a necessary kitchen cooking utensil.

The next subheading — Try Something New — shows they’ve done their research on cooking. One of the most common complaints heard around the dinner table is that the meal is the same. The family wants something new. One of the big challenges with cooking something new is that of fear. Fear of not having the right ingredients. Fear that it will be too much work. Fear of it not turning out. Fear of the family not liking it. Apple is promoting their iPad as your sous-chef. If you have them helping you, chances are greater that it will turn out and be the source of acclaim from the family.

Another aspect that makes me want to run out and get an iPad for the kitchen is the Create and Share Your Own Cookbook section. What a terrific way to stay connected to grown children and send off your new birdie from the nest. Gone are the days when you fill a recipe box with treasured recipes on notecards. Now you can hit share and Great Grandma’s Norwegian favorites will live on. 

With all Apple is offering for cooking, the iPad may soon replace my kitchen shears as my favorite kitchen gadget.
