Food tracking technology is apparently an $11 billion industry. The New England fishing industry is trying to survive and feels this tracking technology may be their best bet to differentiate themselves. The app is under development and will allow the buyer to scan the fish and follow the path all the way back to the smiling fisherman.

They will be working with This Fish to deliver the technology. Already you can scan a code on the fish you bought and trace its journey from the ocean to your plate. New England wants to offer this for the fish they sell from their waters.

Safety is one concern that makes this tracking technology valuable. Babymed.com offers input on how to know if food is safe for pregnant women by highlighting food tracking technology and learning about the mercury content in fish. Some people just want to know their fish was caught in local waters and the fishermen are treated humanely.

The New England group is trying to add value to their fish by allowing people to know specifics. The amount of data necessary to track all this information is truly mindboggling. In grocery stores when you go through the checkout aisle, each product has a unique bar code. If you buy a bag of chocolate chips, the bar code will be the same for all the chocolate chips of that size and brand. In the fish example, each fisherman might have their own bar code for each type of fish they catch. How many fishermen are there and how many types of fish does each one offer? Will it get to the point that each fisherman will try to market the value and expertise of their fishing over another fisherman? Does it matter? We choose restaurants based on reputation. Maybe we will choose fish that way too.
