Well, Red Nose Day is an event held every two years in the UK. People get together and do something funny for money at home, school, and work. There’s a great night of TV that is designed to inspire the public to give generously. Comic Relief UK raises money for poverty-related issues. A sister organization, Comic Relief Inc., is bringing Red Nose Day to the U.S.A. on May 21, and NBC will be the entertainment host. Long and short: It is a comedy fundraising event to help with poverty.

A red nose has long been a symbol of humor. That much is clear. The goal with Red Nose Day is to have fun, raise money, and change the lives of children. Half of the money raised will be distributed in the U.S. The other half will go to help worldwide. There are 12 organizations that will receive the money and effect change related to poverty. They are The Boys and Girls Club, charity:water, Gavi: The Vaccine Alliance, Lift, National Council of Raza, National Urban League, Oxfam America, Save the Children, Children’s Health Fund, Feeding America, The Global Fund, and United Way. This is impressive. We just didn’t get all of that from the Red Nose Day display at Walgreens.

Maybe they think we all knew. Maybe they think we would all research it. But we didn’t just know or we didn’t just read everything on their marketing materials. It might be that the focus is on entertainment and having fun and the donating part comes second. Perhaps, but maybe not. Maybe the communication vehicle was just a little lacking in explaining that red noses are to help poverty.

Now you know about Red Nose Day, and it served as a good lesson in ensuring that the next marketing message you create conveys all the parts of the message.
