By now, most of us have heard of Uber and Lyft, the safe-ride programs that are cheaper than a taxi. Uber has especially taken the world by storm, but recently news reports about the service have not been positive. Hearing these reports, Uber has set out with a goal for positive change.

Uber has come out with a statement saying that they will be hiring 1 million women by 2020. Considering their company (as of December 2014) had 160,000 employees, and only 14% of them were women, that is a big undertaking. To fulfill that statement, they have partnered with UN Women to help them create jobs globally. Creating that many jobs across the world will be a huge economic opportunity for women.

Safety for female passengers has become a major concern with all ride-sharing companies, but because of Uber’s recent incidents, their reputation has been severely damaged. Creating a safer environment for female passengers is a move in the right direction as long as the women passengers are able to request a woman driver. As of right now, the app does not allow you to request a certain driver, but with the new changes ahead, this will most likely be one of them.

Globally, women are being targeted by Uber to feel safer. Drivers and passengers both embrace the goal of safety. Uber as a company is doing what they think is best to create a safe-ride program for everyone. 1 million female drivers by 2020; let’s make it happen.
