Nutella, the chocolate spread made from hazelnuts, celebrated 50 years in 2014, and in 2015, its founder, Michele Ferrero, passed into chocolate heaven. Nutella was a marketing success in offering affordable chocolate to the masses.

When Ferrero came up with the idea for Nutella, times were hard and chocolates were not affordable to many people. Ferrero wanted to offer a sweet treat to the masses. His recipe included hazelnuts from the region. When Nutella was introduced in a spreadable formula, its success exploded. Ferrero ate Nutella on bread for breakfast as a boy, and now his grandchildren do the same.

Nutella has been marketed as a healthy breakfast option, and in many schools you will find children bringing Nutella sandwiches in their bag lunches. People are trying to find healthy food options that are tasty. Nutella tastes good and people believe it to be healthy. Nutella is a global success and has been marketed as a healthier option since it contains hazelnuts.

According to Livestrong.com, “Nutella is a smooth, creamy hazelnut and chocolate spread that is like peanut butter but sweeter. Because it contains hazelnuts, Nutella could provide support for your heart and some nutrients for your diet. However, because of its high fat and sugar content, eat it only on occasion.” A nutrition blog says, “There’s no reason breakfast can’t be both healthy and delicious, but serving up sugar, modified vegetable oils and processed chocolate in the morning just isn’t the way to go.”

The Ferrero family has done a tremendous job developing and marketing Nutella. For people who believe it is a healthy food item, you just have to read the label. Enjoy Nutella as it was intended — a little transgression — and give homage to the man who created it.
