Corona: The Pride of Mexico

Our latest adventure took us to Cancun, Mexico. Already being Corona aficionados, we were excited to travel to the land where Corona was made. Corona signs were everywhere and the country showed their pride in their beer product. Nowhere was it more noticeable than on Isla Mujeres.

Isla Mujeres is a 20-minute boat ride from Cancun. It is a beautiful island with a turtle sanctuary, lovely snorkeling, and many tourist shops. Corona signs and items were plentiful. Guests to the island rent both scooters and golf carts. We favored the golf cart due to the size of our group. One of our memorable attractions was the drive-through snack shop with coolers of Corona. Smalll bottles were 50 cents a piece and nice and cold.

Constellation Brands bought the Corona Mexican brewery and the company that imports it to the U.S. in 2013. They put aggressive marketing and advertising behind it and saw great results. While major beer brands are declining due to micro breweries and specialty beers, Corona saw an increase. Beer connoisseurs aren’t sure why. Corona ranks low in beer ratings, but Americans seems to like beer that others find distasteful.

Other reviewers of Corona will say that the company isn’t marketing beer. They say they are marketing sun, sand, and lime wedges. We think they are marketing a bit more. In this world, it takes all kinds and some of those kinds do like Corona. While we think drinking it on a beach in the hot sun is one of the best options, drinking it in the cold Midwest is still nice. Visiting the country of its making just makes us like it even more.
