Is Lowe’s Annoying Holiday Marketing Successful?

Do you have someone at your office who wears Christmas sweaters, decorates their cubicle, and has Christmas music playing while they work? That can be annoying. Even more annoying are the holiday commercials that make no sense but air over and over again to promote a simple product.

The key to successful advertising is retention; simply, what the consumer does after seeing the ad. Lowe’s is airing a commercial “How to Make a Snowman While Eating a Turkey Leg.” A man is leaning against the outside of his holiday-decorated house and watching his snowman inflate. The ad then tells you to get 15% off all GE Christmas lights. Will that make people run to Lowe’s for their Christmas lights and other items?

Retention and action. Will people remember this ad? It is annoying and partly funny. When you are thinking about getting holiday lights, will you remember the Lowe’s ad and buy them at Lowe’s? Well, now you start to think about it. Then you start to think about what other holiday items you need, and are you going to decorate those bushes this year? Maybe you should get an inflatable snowman, too, while you’re at Lowe’s.

Lowe’s will get business off this ad and even more so if their competitors do not promote Christmas lighting. Annoying is sticky and memorable, unfortunately for the viewer.
