Rob Lowe is a great-looking actor. He brings charisma and attention to the screen. His recent commercial for DirecTV played up on his charm and surprisingly some creepiness. DirecTV created a series of commercials with Rob Lowe, showing two versions of him in each. He appears as his expected good-looking self, and also as a creepy, awkward person. The commercial is surprising, funny, and memorable.

We loved Rob Lowe as a White House staffer in the TV series The West Wing. He played a smart, good-looking, confident, charismatic man. This is the view he takes when he provides DirecTV statistics, proclaiming all the good things DirecTV offers. Then, in a twist that catches you off guard, a spectacular makeup artist and costume person creates him as an awkward, creepy guy. In one instance, he goes to a community pool to peer through binoculars at swimmers since his TV programming is not available (he doesn’t have DirecTV). In another instance, he waits for hours on end (with his high-waisted pants and geeky gelled hair) for the cable guy/girl to show up.

The commercials shocked us at first, then made us laugh. The DirecTV name was mentioned so often, along with the benefits the service provides, that we remembered the advertiser. The marketing is effective. It seems we have to be shocked to pay attention and remember things these days, but DirecTV shocked us in a harmless, funny way. Way to go!
