Microsoft Qik Fliks Are Retail Marketing Gold

If you search for “hot brands use Snapchat,” the floodgates open. Case studies of five smart brands! What 10 early adopters are doing! Don’t miss out on Snapchat’s Potential!

And yeah, recent troubles aside, Snapchat took the world by storm.

However, without much (any?) fanfare, Microsoft launched a new Video Messaging app that might just be a retail marketer’s dream (assuming their customers sign up for the app, and assuming there is one-to-many broadcasting built into this — which is presumably part of Phase 2?).

Think about it like this:

We know retailers already have a boatload of data on their customers. We can guess that a retailer knows when a high-value customer’s birthday is (heck, PetCo sends birthday cards to my dog!). Now, retailers have a new way to surprise, delight, and oh yeah…make a few additional bucks.

Kate Moss has a clothing line at Top Shop. What stops them from teaming up to shoot a quick video where Kate holds up a sign saying, “Happy Birthday, Mike! Bring this to Top Shop in the next two weeks for a birthday discount"? (Other than me being decidedly NOT her target audience.)

And since Microsoft is keeping the video online for two weeks (as opposed to deleting it immediately), it’s a home run.
