Burlington, Vermont is a city of 42,000 people just 45 miles south of the Canadian border; a city is as strong as its people, its business, and it tourism. Burlington markets itself as a vibrant, entrepreneurial city. Burlington markets itself as a city with a great quality of life; historic, yet modern and hip. Burlington’s latest addition to its list of qualities is 100% green electricity.

Cities campaign for business development. Cities campaign for new residents. Cities campaign for tourism dollars. Businesses that are interested in being environmentally conscious and/or have a similar product to sell would do well to base themselves in Burlington. The city benefits from tax dollars and exposure from companies being based in Burlington.

A vibrant city has people continually moving in to the city. It helps keep the real estate market moving, it helps keep restaurants in business, and it keeps schools and tax dollars growing. Hip families that are interested in green movements would list Burlington as one of their choices when deciding where to move. People move where positive things are happening, and people stay in those communities and plant roots.

Cities also thrive when tourism dollars run freely. Burlington may not attract tourism dollars directly from going green, but doing so will definitely put Burlington in the spotlight. When that happens, you can bet Burlington will also play up its many other features and natural beauty.

Burlington has done a great thing in getting 100% of its electricity from renewable sources. It is a shining achievement.
