Macy’s Slapped for Racial Profiling

We love Macy’s. We hated them when they bought Marshall Field’s and changed the Chicago flagship store. We forgave them when they kept Frango mints alive and well in the store. We love them for their “Turn Over a New Leaf” and “The Magic of Giving” campaigns. Now we hate them again for their racial profiling problem.

Macy’s has agreed to pay $650,000 to settle allegations of racial profiling at its flagship store in Manhattan's Herald Square. Several African-American, Latino, and other ethnic minority customers claim they have been apprehended and detained at Macy's stores between 2007 and 2013, despite not having stolen or attempted to steal any merchandise. People accused of shoplifting at Macy’s huge flagship store are escorted by security guards to cells in “Room 140,” where they can be held for hours, asked to sign an admission of guilt, and pay hundreds in fines, sometimes without any conclusive proof they stole anything.

One issue that would help in eliminating problems at department stores is to not allow people to take merchandise on the escalator or elevator between floors. Macy’s could require people to pay for merchandise before leaving a floor. It can be difficult to understand people’s intentions when they carry items from floor to floor. Sometimes when a person is carrying a coat and also merchandise and carry it for a long time, they tend to forget they are even carrying it.

The bigger issue is racial profiling. The color of your skin does not determine whether you are a potential shoplifter. People of all colors should be treated with respect. Period.
