Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz got Oprah to work with him and launch Oprah Chai Tea. That was huge. Now, in what Schultz considers the company’s most significant announcement, Starbucks is partnering with Arizona State University to offer part-time employees tuition reimbursement for online classes.

Have you noticed that Starbucks employs some of the most highly educated people? Many of their employees either have completed degrees and haven’t found work in their fields, or they have stopped taking classes due to debt or work/life balance issues. Starbucks plans to help employees finish college and offer tuition reimbursement with no strings attached. Other companies offer tuition reimbursement, but the employee has to remain at the company after completing schooling for a specified period of time or they are required to pay the money back.

Schultz is known for being vocal on his views and positions. This time, his position is that Americans are being left behind due to inequality within the country. He feels that shouldn’t be acceptable and wants to step up to do something about it. Starbucks is already highly regarded as a great place to work for young people. This move to support college funding will further increase employee interest and loyalty.

Starbucks will also garner additional respect from their older clientele for such an admirable move. This goes way beyond the corporate responsibility of being green and less wasteful. It is investing in our country's youth and our collective future. Starbucks is serving up both coffee and hope.
