The Brand Most Needed In African American Homes: 'Brand Dad'

A few weeks prior to Father’s Day weekend, I took the time to reflect on some of the great leaders that have graced America’s consciousness with the depth of their understanding of life on the natural and spiritual planes; leaders such as Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, Frederick Douglass, and many more African American leaders who have contributed to the fabric of “Black Consciousness.” And during this exploration I found a speech that I hadn’t heard in a while from Barack Obama for Father’s Day in 2008. The speech was riveting!

Obama pointed out something that we all know to be true: Dad is the man! Especially when he’s there rooting alongside and working alongside mom to help breathe self-respect, pride, and brilliance into the lives of their children. Over 50% of African American homes are fatherless. Fifty percent! That’s a lot of dads missing and that’s a lot of young men missing out of the opportunity to learn all about the ‘Dad Brand.” That’s a lot of young women missing out on what a loving father is really like. This lack of support from absent fathers has been known to create a lot of chaos in one-parent homes. Some kids find themselves in difficult situations because they are missing their father’s love. These situations can range from gang affiliations to early pregnancies and other life-altering decisions that can lead kids down the wrong road.

As Obama outlined in his speech, “Any male can have a child, but it takes a man to have the courage to raise that child.” Yes, courage! Raising kids can be a scary thing if you don’t know what you’re doing. It takes a lot of time, patience, self-sacrifice and, most importantly, love. Having the courage to love someone is one of the greatest things in the world. Just think about how many people are scared to be in a relationship for fear of getting hurt. It’s staggering! Many young men are missing the mark not because they are bad guys. It’s because many don’t have a point of reference to what a dad is supposed to be…they never had “Brand Dad” at their homes. Many of their friends never had “Brand Dads” in their homes. So they have been left without brand guidelines on how to raise the next generation of strong fathers.
 
This is something that has to be addressed. This is something that has to stop. But the best way to get the conversation started is to let the man tell you himself.
