How Does Your Brand Look Online?

With the recent launch of the iPhone 5, along with launches and news of new tablets from Google and Microsoft, among others, now is a good time to take a look at your brand’s website. If you’re disappointed in the look of it from an iPad or smartphone or netbook, then you may want to give your site a facelift with Responsive Web Design.
 
It seems like it was only yesterday when there were really only a few different screen sizes. A business built a website for computers and laptops and they built a “mobile” site for smartphones like the newly introduced iPhone and Blackberry Pearl. Five years later, there are many different smartphones and tablets and pads and netbooks and laptops and e-readers on the market with many different screen sizes and resolutions. A one- or two-website look is no longer the best approach for website designs. Responsive Web Design (RWD) is a solution that uses fluid layouts that can adapt and change to fit the screen size the user’s device has. So if you are viewing the same site that uses RWD on your iPad, iPhone, and laptop computer, you’ll notice the layout looks different. A menu that appears in a box on the side on your laptop may be a pull-down menu on your iPhone and a smaller box with less text on your iPad. One of the best and most popular examples of a site designed with RWD is BostonGlobe.com. The best way to get an idea of how RWD works is to view a RWD site on your laptop or desktop computer where you can change the size of your Internet browser’s window. By changing the width of the browser window, you’ll notice the layout of the site changes to make it user-friendly for the specific window size.
 
For businesses and brands, this can be a huge deal as customers are more apt to stay on your site with a user-friendly layout using RWD. It’s also important to note that more and more people are viewing your brand’s site in today’s society on smart phone and tablets rather than on desktop and laptop computers. If you haven’t taken a look at your site recently on a mobile platform like the iPhone or the iPad, you may want to. And if you’re not happy with what you see, then your customers probably aren’t either. Whether it’s RWD, a separate mobile site, or perhaps even a mobile app, you need to make sure your brand looks its best online.
