PR Finds a Spot on 'U.S. News' Top Jobs List

Most people in our business equate PR with several things, most of which come with biting off your nails down to the cuticle and remaining highly caffeinated to bring Nosferatu out in the light of the day. It's no secret that the life we flacks have chosen is just a skosh stressful, so suffice to say, it seems a major domo with PRSA knows someone with U.S. News and gave one sublime pitch. 

Why? U.S. News just listed Public Relations Specialist as one of its best jobs in 2012

What the what?! 

From the article: "The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects public relations specialists employment growth of 22.5 percent between 2010 and 2020. During that time period, an additional 58,200 jobs will need to be filled." In fact, our fabled profession landed No. 41 on this hallowed list. Speaking of a PRSA bigwig: 

"With the onset of social infrastructure such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Pinterest, combined with the versatility of Web tools, the jobs of public relations specialists are growing at a fast clip," says Gerard Corbett, chair and CEO of the PRSA. 

So with the advent of social media and its ballyhooed popularity we should disregard the daily phone calls of, "Hey, where in the hell is my Wall Street Journal cover story?" despite the fact that the product is the main competitor for the Sham-Wow. Under most circumstances, it would be easy to field some of those calls and hit "7" for the rest of them. However, since your Caller ID reads, "Dimwit PR Person" to most journalists, this gig gets a little cumbersome.

The average journalist gets about 1,000 forms of communication each day. The majority of those are pitches that begin with "Dear Dave" when the contact's name is Yolanda. Yet, your dazzling brillance is going to stand out with someone that controls your fate at the answer of an email. No return message, and you could lose your job. A return message of "Sorry, not interested," means you swallow your pride and tell your client. And then, there's the magic when you get the "No, I didn't get the email. Please...resend that." Magic? Sure. Because you can always spin that as "I believe we have some interest." You know, no pressure. 

I adore what I do, but "best jobs"? It must be the free client lunches.
