We expected holiday marketing promotions to be big this year, but so far, they’ve been even bigger than big. The typical holiday shopper is looking for value and, in turn, promotional offers have increased dramatically.

According to Experian CheetahMail, the percentage of retail email campaigns offering “50% off” was 30% higher than last year. Specifically, the keyword of “50% off” experienced the largest growth. Smaller promotions offering 10% or 20% off have been offered less.

Urgency in promotions has also increased: 16 of the top 25 subject lines this season included time-sensitive keywords such as “today,” “now,” and “only,” and flash sales have increased by 31%.

According to Experian CheetahMail’s Rachel Bergman, these holiday campaigns have “yielded terrific results thus far…” But what happens when the holiday season is over?
